Music can be a really helpful tool for English language learners who want to improve their pronunciation.

Iniko singing Jericho - Improve your English Pronunciation
Improve your English Pronunciation through Music

Here are a few reasons why:

  1. Music is a fun and engaging way to practice pronunciation. Listening to songs and singing along can be a great way to get motivated and keep your practice sessions interesting.

  2. Music exposes learners to a variety of accents and styles of English. By listening to different genres of music, learners can hear a range of pronunciations, which can help them develop a more flexible and adaptable approach to speaking English.

  3. Music provides a model for stress and intonation. Stress and intonation are key aspects of English pronunciation that can be difficult for learners to master. By listening to music, learners can hear how native speakers use stress and intonation to convey meaning, and they can practice imitating these patterns.

  4. Music offers repetition and reinforcement. Many songs have choruses or refrains that are repeated throughout the song. This repetition can be helpful for learners who want to practice a particular sound or pattern of pronunciation.

  5. Music can help learners build vocabulary and grammar skills. By listening to and singing along with songs, learners can pick up new vocabulary and grammar structures in context, which can make them easier to remember and use in conversation.

Today, I'd like you to 🎧 Listen to INIKO singing her song named Jericho a cappella. You will clearly hear how she stresses content words while the function words are reduced (not pronounced clearly).

CONTENT WORDS ARE NOUNS & ADJECTIVES & VERBS & ADVERBS. Nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are content parts of speech. Function words are words that exist to explain or create grammatical or structural relationships into which the content words may fit. Words like “of,” “the,” and “to,” have little meaning on their own. Try listening to her and paying attention to how she pronounces these lyrics.

To help you out, I have created a free PDF file with her lyrics and highlighted the content words in BOLD in the lyrics. If you'd like to download the file, click below.

Enjoy!
